Bank Of Mum And Dad

To include a suggestion made by PK Read at champagnewhisky.com, on the direction of my blog; I thought I’d begin this post by providing you an insight into what set this idea whirling around my mind in the first place.

When I was in college, and then university, I looked about myself and saw those students with the flash cars and the latest mobile phones. I wondered how they afforded such luxuries, until I learnt their secret.

These students had at their disposal their parent’s bank accounts; to pay their rent, buy their food and pay their bills as well as credit card bills too. I literally was aghast.

You see I didn’t have that, nor did I expect that. My parents ethos was work, and learn the meaning of money; it was a ‘you can’t get anything for nothing’ type of attitude. So, I worked and studied. I also learnt more than the lessons I attended taught me; life isn’t served up just to my specific taste at a click of my eager fingers. I learnt that what I wanted I had to work for, and to take responsibility for myself and my life.

Yet, so many ‘kids’ out there never learn this. In essence, they never grow up, they are the Peter Pan’s of society. Well, as far as facing the real world doldrums of paying your own way goes, and not to mention taking responsibility for yourself.

Also, I noticed these ‘kids’ attitudes towards material goods. How to have something which was worked for, was not valued and was seen as insignificant. The reason for this, well they had what they wanted when they wanted it, and didn’t need to value anything. So me driving my ‘vintage’ VW wasn’t to their discerning and expensive tastes; at least I owned my own car, and paid my own way. Something I’m certain they would have died of shock doing!

So, having left college, university and then beginning to working full time, I soon met other ‘kids’. These people although they worked, they were young enough to be in college or university – and yet, they still had this reliance on their Mum and Dad.

WHY??

Well, they claimed it was just too expensive to detach themselves from the proverbial apron strings; rent. mortgages, utility bills, food and so on, breaks their meagre bank. Their parent’s help supplement these poor strapped for cash individuals; who, let me add, were on good wages for singletons, with no kids and no house to run!!!!

In fact this still goes on now. I hear people I know comment on how their siblings or even their own children can’t afford to move out, to claim their own independence. Well, I have a different take on the reason they are still bleeding their families dry, and it goes like this…………………

People, young people, can’t afford to move out of their parent’s house, ummmm, probably because they prefer to squander all their wages on a ‘champagne lifestyle’.

These young people opt , instead of fledging the nest, to book their next expensive holiday on some sun kissed island, where the only prices that will bother them are those of the cocktails they purchase!

They say, ‘rent and mortgages are too expensive for me’ (in a whiny voice). Well yes, they can be, but so to can brand new cars, fake tans, hair extensions, jewellery, acrylic nails, nights out in clubs, new clothes, cigarettes, drugs and plastic surgery (yes, this too is on the menu)!

So, maybe the £500 plus a month wasted on their own lavishness, could indeed be spent on moving away from Mum and Dad, and paying for those oh so tiresome domestic bills, before they reach 40!

Or maybe those diamond encrusted iPhone cases are something they can’t live without, or maybe they can, if they had to. If they were given a theoretical kick up the bottom by the parents in question!

Now, I’m not suggesting young people don’t spend their money, I for one know I have spent, or squandered,  a fair share of my own; but then I did move out in my 20’s! I know of people who are in their 30’s and still wasting their money on booze and Ibiza boat trips, and they have the cheek to moan about being strapped for cash!

When will they learn that money, some money, is better in the bank than in a beer bottle?

Money savvy counts. I feel now, more than ever, this is going amiss in the world. Everyone tends to forget about it or doesn’t value what they have. They are under the false illusion that money is another ‘never ending resource’ like coal or gas, and even if they run out of it, Mum and Dad will provide what they need.

Money it seems does in fact grow on trees now, well I never!!!

Money is no longer worked for, accrued  earned, gained. Money is given gratis, courtesy of the Mum and Dad’s across the world, to the children that cling ever longer to their coat tails.

These young people now get fed the milk and honey of a never ending stream of money.

When will the hand outs stop? How old must these ‘kids’ become??

I understand love, care, concern and support – but when does this just become a bad joke? How can anyone differentiate between this, and being used and abused by the very individuals they gave life to?

When is the line crossed?  When will enough, be enough?

When do parents reclaim their own lives and say, that is it, no more?

New Blogging Direction – An Experiment

So, before I signed off WordPress to return to the UK last week, I was pondering the direction my blog was moving in. I wanted to experiment with new themes, and introduce something more than my usual politics or sociological posts .

I asked for some advice on this from my readers, and had some great feedback. THANKS TO EVERYONE who did respond to my quandary 😀

During my week away though I found myself writing quite a lot in a little note book I took with me. I actually felt revived, my mind seemed unshackled and clearer. Being in the UK actually gave me renewed impetus, and I felt new ideas come to me.

Consequently I have tried out these new ideas in a few posts already:

Not So Common Sense Of Common Sense

‘M’ Is For The Many Ways I’d Maim ‘Her’

Y.O.L.O

I have been mulling over life, feelings, thoughts and observations on life – a real mixed bag of themes!

I am hoping to receive SOME feedback on what I have written from my readers (If they still exists)! I am sensing a sort of lull, which makes me feel that somehow I have been out of the blogsphere loop too long 😦

Is a week away too long a time to encourage ANYONE to have a read of my words???? I HOPE NOT!!

PLEASE, I WOULD APPRECIATE YOUR OPINIONS on these posts. Let me have YOUR thoughts 🙂

P.S: THANKS TO ALL OF YOU who take time to read what I write and respond!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As always; I APPRECIATE IT!!!

“You only live once” – a reference used to provide a green light for, or excuse something someone wishes to do that perhaps others may frown upon.

If it is true – and I am not debating reincarnation, afterlife, or any other religious belief here really, I am just acting on the assumption that life will only occur once for all of us who inhabit the planet.
So once again, IF IT IS TRUE, IF WE ONLY LIVE ONCE then we ought to be a bunch of selfish, self centred, self serving, egotistical meat heads?????????????????? Shouldn’t we????????

Why concern ourselves with politics, law, money and love??? Why abide by the rules, accumulate as much material wealth as possible, fixate on our health and diets???

We are only ever going to get one chance to live, therefore why weren’t we all born with ‘rockets’ attached to bottoms, which would spur us on from the moment we could walk?? Why wouldn’t we just all do what pleases us, what gets us the most from life??? Why would we follow anything laid out by the doctrines of society, community, family and so on????

What purpose would treading that ingrained path and towing that frayed line get us, if we did only live once????

If we are only living once then why waste time on drowning our sorrows with alcohol, working a 9-5, buying a house, repairing a car, investing in family and saving our money???????

Why not instead live life in a wild and crazy haze of fun, fun, fun? Living our lives to the max by seeing the world, travelling, meeting people, taking many lovers, stealing, cheating and lying and whatever else the ‘exotic’ could hold to tempt and entice us?????

Or, is the premise of the saying to do something more worthwhile with your life, not to waste your time on nonsense and that which makes you unhappy and unfulfilled????

Doesn’t Y.O.L.O advocate the ethos – do all you can, as quick as you can, while you can??????

If not, what is the point in saying it at all????

What in fact does it truly mean anyway??? Does anyone ever consider the meaning before they say it????

It seems Y.O.L.O encourages freedoms, because it chooses to assume that there are no consequences to face for individual actions and so on. Yet, in reality there often almost always are repercussions!

Is Y.O.L.O just an excuse to be a ‘loner’ or a ‘wolf’???? An excuse to treat those around you like doggie do do??? An excuse not to ingratiate yourself with the ‘normal’ world???

I would like to put this theory or saying to the test, and see where it gets me!!! It might make a good sociological study, something to prompt further posts even!!! Y.O.L.O actually sounds like a principle that could make a damn good comedy film.

Where did this “you only live once” notion spring from anyway???

“You only live once” – Are you so sure of that????

‘M’ Is For The Many Ways I’d Maim ‘Her’

Who is her you might ask, well, it could be anyone, couldn’t it????

Perhaps it is reference to us, and how quick we are to shoot ourselves in the foot time and time again??

Or maybe we just like to shoot others down – whatever, it all amounts to the same thing; harbouring a tinge of fear or anger.

Well, I know I am guilty of thinking ‘How bloody dare they?!’ With an incredulous tone. Oh, and not to forget, ‘They’ll get their comeuppance’.

Yet, that doesn’t mean I’m about to hunt them down and make them sorry they were born.

Whether these others are at fault or even if they deserve a smack in the mouth – why the Hell should I care, and even deign to let them set foot over the threshold of my little sanctuary of peace of mind?

Can it ever be worthwhile going all out to ensure the person who has done you wrong gets it back??

I’m asking, but can assure, I’m not the vengeful type!!!

I mean doesn’t this all out ARGHHHHHH!!!!!!!! Really just destroy a piece of you, before you destroy a piece of the person who made you initially feel ARGHHHHHHH!!!!!???

Isn’t this game we could opt to play to get back, merely just stooping to a childish tit for tat mentality?

What’s the point in ‘maiming’ someone, just so you feel you have recompense?

The many ways I’d maim ‘her’, ummmmm, well I’m sure there could be many, but the best is truly acting as though nothing is wrong.

Rise to the bait and it is you who is maimed and not ‘her’.

The Not So Common Sense Of Common Sense

Phew!!!!

Have you recovered from that long winded title?????

Yes? Good, well then I shall explain myself or rather my point a little further.

This loosely and often applied term ‘common sense’ is linked with and to a multitude of people, things and situations.

Get something wrong – you have no common sense,
Drive in the wrong lane – you have no common sense,
Brush your teeth before breakfast – you have no common sense,
Drink whiskey on an empty stomach – you have no common sense,
Be the Government to create a penny pinching policy – well, those idiots have no common sense!

So why is it then that this ‘sense’, which is apparently lacking in abundance, is extremely important, and so valued????

Why is it that everyone feels it is their given right to point out the deficit of such ‘sense’ on a near daily basis???

Who has the legitimate authority to even point out that is it lacking????

Where is the rule book of ‘common sense’ and who wrote it?

How can we even really define or rate ‘common sense’ to then know when it is missing from a person, thing or situation???

Yet, we do define and rate it, and are quite quick and apt at then point this missing element out to those and that which are responsible for lapsing in applying it.

Strange isn’t it?????????????????????
